Developing compassionate, caring and responsible citizens for better social worlds.

The CosmoKidz Program

Fostering constructive social behavior

The CosmoKidz program is an exciting new set of educational resources designed to help teachers, parents and youth mentors to foster constructive social and emotional development in children and teens. The CosmoKidz activities fit in with the new move in educational thinking: a shift from training students for cleverness, competition and success to helping them become fulfilled individuals, whatever their talents, and active compassionate citizens.

“All of us are responsible for developing future citizens that care about creating a better society. CosmoKidz is impressive for its proven ability to engage children with activities that foster their core attributes, like curiosity, creativity, self-awareness, and sociability.”

Marilyn Price-Mitchell, PhD, developmental psychologist & author, Tomorrow’s Change Makers.

“This program is a game changer. It really can change an entire classroom, an entire community. The culture in the school. It is necessary. So much emphasis is laid on academics. And somewhere along this path we have lost focus on who the child is and what the child really needs.”

Core social skills

The program consists of a series of conversational activities developed for different age groups—from children, to tweens and teens—based on something we call a cosmopolitan sensibility. It’s a different way of looking at how we relate with children and how we’d like them to relate with others. It also helps us focus on important things that most people don’t pay attention to that happens in our communicating with others.

CosmoKidz helps to cultivate:

  • an appreciation of the importance of our interpersonal worlds and how we become who we are in relation with others
  • the development of compassionate persons, sensitive to what is made in communicating and respecting diversity in its fullest sense
  • the capacity to be curious, creative and self-reflexive
  • understanding our obligation to others and the broader environment in which we live
  • dialogic and deliberative skills as the means of making better social and civic worlds.

“We are really communicating at a different level with our students, and they are really blossoming.”

“I can highly recommend CosmoKidz not only as a relational toolkit for working with children in schools and daycare (and their parents), but also for strengthening relationships and collaboration amongst professionals. Training social and relational skills in daycare and schools is increasingly important, especially in the light of the postmodern society. CosmoKidz pave the way for a more relational language and for more relational responsibility amongst children, youth and adults. It makes people and groups flourish in ways that are highly valued. From my perspective using CosmoKidz could easily be mandatory for all professionals working with children..”

~ Gro Emmertsen Lund, ph.d., Organisational consultant, Researcher, Author

“I have been working with it [CosmoKidz] for the past 5 years. It has been amazing and we have seen incredible growth. The kids are learning to be good citizens, they have empathy and critical thinking, and their communication skills have improved. And you know, that goes into all areas. Their academics, their social lives. And they even bring it home to their families.”

Simple, fun and flexible

The CosmoKIdz activities are not meant to be part of a curriculum. The activities in the program are all designed to fit in with whatever is being taught.

“I can tweak it to fit my students, my teaching style; it fits any opportunity, any circumstance that can happen – in the classroom or when there is something, there is a card that I can tweak or fit to meet the situation.”

~ Kindergarten teacher

The activities are also designed to be engaging for students, teachers and parents alike—whoever is using them.

“It is fun, it is entertaining to the kids, it gives us some time to have conversations and laugh and express ourselves. It is SO important, because somebody needs to be having these conversations with the children.”

And…

The teachers who are already using the CosmoKidz activities have found it a wonderful and gratifying experience.

“Today, one of my students came up to me as we were lining up after recess. She said, ‘Ms. ______, some girl told me I was stupid and ugly.’ And before I could even say anything, she continued with passion, ‘I told her I was actually very smart and not ugly and that she was being a bully and that’s not how we’re supposed to treat other people.’

I asked, ‘What did she say to that?’

My student replied, ‘She said I was right and she didn’t want to be a bully. She said she was sorry and that she’d never say that to me again.’
